Thieves hit Kearny Mesa jewelry store overnight

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - One man is in custody and the search continues for a second suspect accused of trying to break into a Kearny Mesa jewelry store.

Shortly after 3:00 a.m. Wednesday, a San Diego police officer in the 4600 block of Convoy Street noticed two men that appeared suspicious. They then took off running. Around the same time, an alarm was triggered at Danny's Jewelers located nearby.

Police found damage to a wall in a vacant office space near the jewelry store. Police say it appears the two men were trying to break into the store through the wall.

Nothing was taken, but police have the van they believe the thieves were driving.

"We are suspicious. The vehicle may have been stolen because it appears the van has been cold plated and the front of the vehicle has duct tape placed over the front license plate. So we are under the assumption it has likely been stolen," said Lieutenant David Rohowits with the San Diego Police Department.

Police say the van is registered to a business and they have not been able to contact the owner.
