SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Crime was down across the board in San Diego in 2010, according to statistics released Wednesday by the city.
Compared to 2009, violent crime dropped 5.3 percent and property crimes were down 4.6 percent.
The number of murders dropped from 41 in 2009 to 29 last year.
"That's the lowest number since 1968," said Mayor Jerry Sanders, the city's former police chief.
San Diego traditionally ranks among the nation's safest large cities.
"The numbers show we're getting even safer," Sanders said.
The mayor and police Chief William Lansdowne credited proactive police work, like taking gang members off the streets, and conducting truancy and curfew sweeps, for the drop in crime.
Juveniles are now less likely to commit crimes, or become victims, because of the sweeps, Lansdowne said.
The statistics show a 12.3 percent decrease in the number of juveniles who were crime victims between 2009 and 2010, while the number of juveniles arrested climbed 4.6 percent -- most of which occurred before the 10 p.m. curfew.
The number of reported rapes dropped from 318 to 300' robberies were down 14.1 percent' and aggravated assaults edged down 0.4 percent.
For property crimes, there were 4.6 percent fewer burglaries and 0.4 percent less thefts, with a 14.8 percent drop in vehicle thefts.
The violent crime rate of 4.1 per 1,000 residents is half what it was in 1997.
There were 22.4 property crimes per 1,000 residents, a little over half of the 1997 rate.
