Armed parolee shot and killed by officers

KEARNY MESA (CBS 8) - An armed parolee is dead after officers opened fire during a confrontation in a hotel parking lot in Kearny Mesa on Wednesday night.

"Total chaos seemed to be going on," said eyewitness Rick Hutcherson, who saw the events unfold from his fourth-floor room in a hotel across the street from the shooting.

Investigators say California parole agents and San Diego Police tracked the wanted parolee to the Best Western on Kearny Villa Road. A stake-out went on for several hours until the suspect and a woman left the room around 7 p.m. Officers confronted the couple in the hotel parking lot. They say the man pulled a gun on them. That's when parole officers opened fire, hitting the man.

"The state parole agents, who identified themselves as law enforcement, told him to stop," said Captain Jim Collins of the San Diego Police Department, "When the suspect raised his hands, he had a pistol in his hand. The parole agents fired and the suspect went down."

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but pronounced dead about an hour later. The female accomplice was taken in for questioning.
