SAN DIEGO (AP) - A man who firebombed police stations and vehicles in San Diego has been sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to attend a program for mentally ill offenders.

City News Service says a judge gave 27-year-old Edward Batties credit for time served and suspended a six year prison term Thursday.

Batties pleaded guilty to two counts of felony arson in January. He could be sent to prison if he violates his probation.

The judge says Batties acknowledged he had mental health problems after his father died, which led him to toss homemade Molotov cocktails at police stations, homes and an unoccupied school last February. No buildings burned.

Prosecutors say Batties' mother pushed for the plea agreement and explained her son's mental illness to investigators so he could get help.
