SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - What began as a traffic stop on State Route 163 ended in a pursuit, crash, and four people in the hospital, according to San Diego Police.

California Highway Patrolman report they attempted to pull over a white Honda for speeding on Southbound SR163 when the vehicle exited on 6th Avenue and appeared as though it was going to stop.

Police say the CHP officer had lights and sirens on and even used the car's PA system when the vehicle suddenly took off South on 6th Avenue.

News 8 is told CHP officers stopped the pursuit citing safety concerns in the city and actually lost visual contact with the suspect vehicle.

After driving further South along 6th Avenue; the unit came upon the accident scene.

According to witnesses, the white Honda went through the intersection at an extremely high rate of speed, slamming into a silver Toyota, before hitting a light pole and flipping on its' top.

Inside the Toyota a family of three sat stunned, but were quickly assisted by bystanders. The male driver appeared to have severe head trauma, according to witnesses.

The driver, according to CHP reports, managed to climb out of the overturned Honda, but then put up a fight with patrolmen who in turn used 'maximum force' to subdue him and take him into custody.

Meanwhile, the other passenger in the white Honda was trapped underneath the car and San Diego Firefighters had to use air bags to raise the vehicle up to retrieve the crash victim.  He along with the three family members were transported to a local hospital.

The driver of the Honda was taken by CHP for processing. No charges were filed at the time of this report.
