City Council approves spending $2.5M for road resurfacing

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council on Monday approved spending $2.5 million to resurface 147 miles of roadways citywide.

Council members say potholes and other roadway problems are the number one topic they hear about from constituents, and poor road conditions were only worsened by December's rains.

"This is very top-of-mind for residents in the city of San Diego," Councilman Kevin Faulconer said.

Among the major roadways to receive a slurry seal coating this spring are Via Capri, Soledad Mountain Road, Mississippi Street, Spring Canyon Road and Boulder Lake Avenue. The slurry seal fills cracks and other road imperfections.

The rule-of-thumb is for streets to receive a slurry seal every seven years and repaving every 21 years, according to city staff.

Another resurfacing project, for busy Mission Gorge Road, is set to come before the City Council on Tuesday.

A recent audit of the city Street Division found that 17 percent of the roads in San Diego are in poor condition, and the city is $377 million behind in keeping them in shape.

At a meeting this morning, members of the City Council's Audit Committee approved a plan to get city departments and contractors to coordinate projects so that newly paved roads aren't torn up soon after for previously scheduled work.
