New city hall complex now up to City Council

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (CBS 8) - Building a new city hall is now in the hands of the San Diego City Council.

The current headquarters for the city is 47 years old and plagued with maintenance problems that could cost more than $20 million over the next 10 years.

Plans were drawn up last year, but the proposal was shelved when city officials opted to back a half-cent sales tax increase last November.

The council's president said he envisioned a complex that included offices for the state and port of San Diego, so the money to pay for a new building wouldn't have to come only from the city.
