Crews work to repair broken water main in Allied Gardens

SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - Crews are repairing a water main that ruptured underneath an Allied Gardens intersection Tuesday afternoon, leaving dozens of homes temporarily without functional plumbing and shutting down traffic lanes in the neighborhood.

City crews remained on the scene through Tuesday night and well into Wednesday morning, after an antiquated water main burst at Chaparajos Court and Conestoga Way in Allied Gardens at around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, turning local streets into rivers.

"All I heard was four loud booms -- boom, boom, boom, boom," said Allied Gardens resident Michael Peariso. "I came out to see what it was, and there was the street flooded."

Crews had the overflow, which reportedly flooded some residential property, under control within an hour, SDWD spokesman Arian Collins.

Residents are expected to remain without water service at least until two o'clock Wednesday morning.

"The shower is the worst part of it, and of course the toilets are a little bit of an inconvenience," said Allied Gardens resident Andrea Tofte. "The dog is the only one who is kind of in luck, because we can send him outside," she joked.

The mishap left 52 homes without water service, Collins said. All the affected residences were expected to be back on line and the roadways reopened by about 2 a.m. Wednesday.

While the cause is still under investigation, old age may have played a role in the rupture of the 12-inch concrete water main.
