Baby hippo born at San Diego Zoo is a boy

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A hippopotamus born at the San Diego Zoo two weeks ago is a boy, the zoo announced Thursday.

The hippo, named Adhama, which means honor or glory in Swahili, was born Jan. 26 before a crowd of about 100 zoo visitors.

The hippo's two-ton mom, named Funani, has not let her baby stray from her side since. However, officials were able to figure out the sex of the calf when they went into a barn.

"Fuanani is a great mom," said Matt Akel, a San Diego Zoo animal care supervisor. "She's defensive, which is natural for a mother hippo protecting her calf, but she is slowly becoming more comfortable and coming into the barn."

The baby hippo was named in honor of senior mammal keeper Adam Ruble, who died in January when he was struck by a car on Interstate 15.
