More than 530 teachers could face layoffs in proposed budget

Posted: Updated:

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS (CBS 8) -  Educators, school district employees and concerned parents packed a special budget meeting at San Diego Unified School District headquarters Thursday night, where board member approved recommendations for a new budget.

As it stands now, the district is facing $120 million in cuts, most of which would come through personnel.

The plan includes cutting 535 classroom teachers, among 1,300 employees. The staff reductions are part of a plan put together by Superintendent Bill Kowba.

The Board of Education has resisted layoffs of teachers in recent years, but school officials have said it is no longer avoidable because personnel costs make up most of the district's budget.

Depending on whether voters pass Gov. Jerry Brown's tax proposals this summer, the district will face budget shortfalls of either $120.6 million or $63.6 million for the school year that begins in September, according to the report.

The superintendent's plan also calls for severe cuts to the district's central office staff, but is designed to protect programs like athletics, arts and music -- which could see funding reductions, but not elimination.
