LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities have recovered the body of a 24-year-old man who died while trying to rappel from the top of a 400-foot waterfall in the Cleveland National Forest.
The Medical Examiner's Office has identified him as Matthew Pack, from San Juan Capistrano. Sheriff's Lt. Jim Duffy says a hiker called 911 Friday to report hearing someone in Mildred Falls near Julian calling for help.
Two separate helicopter crews from the sheriff's and fire departments were not able to rescue the hiker, seen hanging limply from a rope in the pounding water.
Duffy says rescue efforts ended about midnight and resumed at 6 a.m. Saturday. Members of the sheriff's search and rescue team rappelled down the falls and reached the man shortly before 1 p.m., when they confirmed that he was dead.
