Suspected car thief caught after leading police on chase

Posted: Updated:

MISSION VALLEY (CNS) - A suspect driving a stolen car ditched it, and eluded police in the bamboo thickets of Mission Valley, but was captured by police dogs.

San Diego police officers said they attempted to pull over a man driving a 1998 Honda Civic, registered stolen, in the Clairemont area around noon.

The man refused to pull over and drove to the end of Madison Avenue in University Heights and then into a gated community on Caminito Fuente, that dead-ended at a canyon, officers said.

The driver bailed out and ran into the canyon, hiding in thick bushes, near a T.G.I. Friday's restaurant at 403 Camino del Rio South in Mission Valley by the Route 163-Interstate 8 interchange.

Officers said police dogs were released because the suspect would not surrender.

The suspect was spotted running down to the San Diego River's bamboo thickets, and police feared the suspect would use large rocks that surrounded the area as weapons.

Several police officer teams chased after the suspect for over an hour and he was finally captured by a police dog at 1:46 p.m.

Police said the suspect was treated for dog bite wounds at a hospital and was arrested for suspicion of auto-theft.
