San Diego 'streets czar' accused of child molestation

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A city employee recently dubbed San Diego's "streets czar," who was arrested Monday on suspicion of child molestation, posted bail and will be arraigned Feb. 28, authorities said Tuesday.

Mario Sierra, 47, was booked late this morning on suspicion of committing lewd and lascivious acts with a minor under age 14, according to jail officials.

The Sheriff's Department, which arrested Sierra, provided no details on the allegations.

Last week, the city merged all its street operations and appointed Sierra director of the new Transportation and Stormwater Department. Councilman Kevin Faulconer declared him San Diego's new "streets czar."

In an internal memo, city Chief Operating Officer Jay Goldstone informed the City Council that he had placed Sierra on unpaid leave. The message specified no reason for the suspension.

Sierra faces up to eight years in prison if convicted, said Steve Walker of the District Attorney's Office.
