Caretaker won't stand trial in San Diego woman's death

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A caretaker charged with killing her 83-year-old patient in San Diego has been sent to a mental hospital.

The San Diego Union-Tribune says a judge on Wednesday found Maria Moore incompetent to stand trial because she doesn't understand the charges against her. The 70-year-old woman will be committed to Patton State Hospital for at least three years. Her murder case will be suspended until she's declared competent.

Prosecutors contend that Moore killed Charmian Antaramian, whose body was found last December in the bathroom of her Palm City home.

Police went to check on the elderly woman after a relative reported concerns that she was being abused and neglected.

Officials determined that she died of a traumatic injury.

Moore was found next door.
