550 birds found in SD County cockfighting bust

Posted: Updated:

RAINBOW, Calif. (AP) — San Diego County authorities have found more than 500 birds after stumbling on a cockfighting operation.

The North County Times says an animal control officer searching for a lost dog on a dirt trail spotted a fight under way on Saturday in the Rainbow area.

Animal services Lt. Dan DeSousa says about 550 birds were in pens nearby. Authorities used lethal injections to kill about 300 of them. DeSousa says the birds couldn't be adopted because they would kill other birds.

Another 200 birds remained on the property Monday.

Seven men were cited for cockfighting-related crimes and released.
