SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist crashed into a transformer and caused a power outage that lasted several hours in Poway Monday.

Between 500 and 1,000 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in Poway lost service following the accident at or near Pomerado Road and Metate Lane about 2 a.m., authorities said.

A hazardous materials crew was sent to clean up an oil spill caused by the accident, SDG&E spokeswoman Michelle Nixon said. Transformers are cooled by mineral oil that can catch fire.

So far, as News 8 reports, the driver is not facing any charges.
