Construction phase of Lindbergh Field expansion starts

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Construction replaced destruction at Lindbergh Field Tuesday as workers began installing steel girders for the Terminal 2 expansion project.

About 5,000 tons of steel will be used to make the framework for the 445,000-square-foot expansion on the west side of the terminal, according to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority.

Most of the work up to this point involved clearing away the property, including removal of a pedestrian overpass to the parking lots.

The $1 billion project is designed to include 10 new gates, a dual-level roadway to separate arriving and departing passengers, add more security lanes and provide more more shopping and dining options.

The expansion is expected to be completed in 2013.
