San Diego Girl Scouts troop to take credit cards for cookie purchases

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - If you crave Thin Mints but are short of cash, a Girl Scouts troop in San Diego is now outfitted with mobile credit card scanners, it was announced Wednesday.

The Girl Scouts will use the scanners for all major credit cards when sales get under way Friday and Saturday at Point Loma, thanks to an agreement between Girl Scouts San Diego and mophie, Inc., a designer and manufacturer of mobile devices.

The $4 cookie boxes are traditionally sold on a cash basis.

"We're hoping that being able to use credit cards at our site sales will help us reach or troop sales goals, raising enough money to make a trip to San Francisco and cross the Golden Gate Bridge for a Girl Scout ceremony next year," said Girl Scout Shelley Shinohara of Troop 3099.

The Girl Scouts are hoping to use the new sales device as an opportunity to teach their youngsters about credit, how to save and be responsible with money.

The sales events with the new scanners are scheduled for Friday from 4:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., both at the Fresh & Easy at 955 Catalina Blvd.
