POWAY (CNS) - A 20-year-old man was arrested early Thursday for allegedly ramming the side of a patrol car before leading authorities on a pursuit that lasted several miles, from Poway to 4S Ranch.

A deputy responded to a call about a silver Lexus circling the Wal-Mart parking lot at 13425 Community Road in a suspicious manner about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Keith Griggs.

When the deputy approached the driver of the Lexus, the driver accelerated rapidly in reverse and struck the passenger side of the deputy's
patrol vehicle, Griggs said.

The driver of the Lexus then drove off northbound through the parking lot and onto Community Road with the deputy in pursuit, Griggs said, adding that the pursuit ended in 4S Ranch when the deputy eventually lost sight of the Lexus.

About 2:40 a.m., authorities went to 14594 Via Bergamo in the Torrey Highlands area and arrested John Canning on suspicion of being the driver of the Lexus, Griggs said. It was not immediately clear what led authorities to that address.
