Lou's Records: Final vynal

Posted: Updated:

ENCINITAS (CBS 8) - Lou Russell has been in the record business since 1980. For the past decade, Lou's Records has been located in a funky cottage along a retro stretch of Olde Highway 101.

"We're selling vinyl, we're selling CDs, old VHS, basically the same stuff we've always been selling, just a lot less," Lou said.

In its heyday, Lou's Records comprised three buildings, but they've consolidated into one, from 5,500 square feet to just over 2,000.

"Everything's in one building, we're trying to keep our overhead low and trying to maintain a viable business," Lou said.

At one time, Lou's had 31 employees. Now there are only eight.

"Basically we're in survival mode right now," he said.

Still, for a baby boomer, browsing the shelves and racks of Lou's is a nearly religious experience.

"We have a few cassettes hanging around. People, you know, 'I still have my '92 Cadillac, I need some cassettes for my Caddy,'" Lou said.

As technology attempts to turn Lou's Records into a little shop of dinosaurs, he manages to stay afloat.

"We have a lot of loyal customers. There are people who come in every week and browse," Lou said.

"I miss my record player, I even miss my tape player and enjoy being able to show my kids, you know what, this is my iPod, my MP3," a customer said.

"Now all of a sudden it's all MP3's, you buy it online. Physical media's just going away, it's becoming extinct," another customer said.

What keeps Lou's Records going is that new technology can never replace old memories.
