Police investigate personal life of missing swimmer

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Investigators are now looking into the background of a swimmer who went missing off La Jolla Shores.

Fifty-four-year-old Jim Repetto of Massachusetts was reported missing Saturday night, when he didn't return from a swim.

Lifeguards searched the waters for more than 14 hours. They don't think Repetto could have survived the cold water and rough storm conditions.

Officials say there are a few strange twists in the story, such as Repetto's family reportedly didn't know he was in San Diego.

"There are extenuating circumstances that I'm not able to speak on, but something with the history are being pursued and law enforcement," said Lifeguard Sgt. Rich Stropky

Police are not commenting on the case. Documents show Repetto entered a guilty plea to defrauding a Massachusetts company of more than $1 million. He was supposed to be sentenced in January, but sentencing was postponed after a car fire left him with severe burns.
