Filler up? Local gas station charging $9 a gallon

RANCHO SANTA FE (CBS 8) - There's no slowdown in the rising price of gas, but $9 a gallon? One station in Rancho Santa Fe is for real, but this is not your ordinary octane.

Rancho Sante Fe VP on La Flecha is anything but your ordinary gas station.

"We like to be a service station from the 50s, clean your windshield, check your fluids, give you full service like when you were a kid," manager Marshall Ouimette said.

But along with that service, and regular unleaded self-serve priced at $3.89 a gallon Tuesday, and $4.09 for premium is fuel for $9 a gallon.

This 100-octane VP racing fuel, called "Street Blaze", is more than twice the price of regular unleaded, specially designed for not your regular cars.

"It is for high performance vehicles, high-compression engines, turbo-charged engines -- Porches, Ferraris, Maseratis -- a lot of your muscle cars from the 60s," Ouimette said.

The fuel helps those high-performance vehicles operate at their peak, getting better gas mileage and more power.

One Rancho Santa Fe resident and loyal customer spent more than $130 to fill up his Maserati's tank.

"I enjoy the speed and the sound it makes - it's wonderful," he said.

"It is Rancho Santa Fe. People have really nice toys, really nice cars, and they want them to work to their peak," Ouimette said.
