Teen dad who stabbed baby is shot to death by deputies

PALMDALE (CNS/CBS 8) - A 17-year-old father who fatally stabbed his 5-month-old son Tuesday was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies in Palmdale, authorities said.

The sheriff's department received a report at 11 a.m. that the baby was abducted, Capt. Mike Parker of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.

Deputies were told that the father kidnapped his son from a person who was taking care of the baby and drove away, Parker said.

A child abduction alert issued by the sheriff's department shortly before 2 p.m., identified the 17-year-old as Christopher Earl Glass and the son as Christopher Earl Glass Jr.

An Amber Alert was issued as deputies began to investigate the kidnapping, and learned that the father had phoned the baby's mother and threatened to harm their son.

Deputies spotted the father's sport utility vehicle about 3:35 p.m. and began to follow him.

"The deputies saw the suspect motion in a manner that appeared as though he was stabbing the baby as he drove his car," Parker said.

"Attempting to get him to stop, deputies went in pursuit of the suspect's vehicle. After about two to three minutes, the suspect was involved in a single-vehicle collision, striking a building."

The building was the Palmdale Transportation Center at 39000 Clock Tower Plaza Drive, which was closed for an investigation.

"All I saw was this car come flying and it hit the column, so I ran," said one young witness, Jerry Bulford.  "And this guy jumps out with a knife in his hand, so I ran away just in case so he doesn't get me."

Deputies chased the elder Glass on foot and saw him trying to break into the home of a family he didn't know about a block from the transportation center and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

A second shooting then occurred inside the home. The suspect died but no deputies were injured.

Other deputies ran to the vehicle, picked up the 5-month-old and raced him to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead there.

Two cousins of the father told KCAL9 they were shocked.

"He was very excited. He was like any other dad, he was just happy to have a baby," said Bobby Hudson, a cousin of the father.

Another cousin, Denise Hudson, said she was "shocked because I just heard his voice yesterday."

"I didn't think he would ever be capable of doing something like that," she said.

"He loved that baby," Denis Hudson added. "He would be holding the baby, feeding him, changing his diaper. I mean, he was a great dad. That's why it's a shock."

Family members say Christopher Glass had been suffering emotional problems since the death of his grandmother last year.
