Man reported missing during ocean swim arrested in Arizona

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A New England man who supposedly went missing during a swim off the coast of La Jolla while awaiting sentencing for a fraud conviction was jailed Wednesday in Arizona, where he apparently fled during or after authorities conducted an exhaustive 20-hour search for him.

Acting on a tip, federal agents arrested James Repetto, 54, of Sandwich, Mass., at a home in Yuma this morning, said Keara Price of the Arizona district office of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Last Saturday afternoon, a friend of Repetto's reported him missing, saying he had failed to return to shore after setting out by himself on a swim from Scripps Pier to La Jolla Shores and back amid blustery, unsettled weather.

A multi-agency search by sea, air and land turned up no sign of Repetto, and the Coast Guard suspended the effort in the mid-afternoon Sunday.

Repetto, a former manager for Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc., pleaded guilty in Boston last fall to taking part in a kickback and phony invoice scheme that defrauded the fruit-juice company out of about $1.3 million, according to federal prosecutors. He and a co-defendant each face up to 20 years in prison in the case.
