Burned cat sings the praises of vets who saved him

Posted: Updated:

CHULA VISTA (CBS 8) - If you're considering adopting a cat, this story may be music to your ears. Luciano the singing cat will soon be heading home with a lucky family.

Just about every other day, an animal gets abandoned at the shelter, but Luciano was found in a box with burns to his paws the staff had never seen before.

Two weeks ago, someone dropped off the orange tabby at the front door of the Chula Vista Animal Care Facility in a bloody box.

"Saw the box, the one corner was open, there was blood on it," Matt Huntington said.

Huntington says when animals are injured, their first instinct is to run away, but this cat just about jumped into his arms.

"That is all he wanted. He wanted human contact and he was not trying to leave," Huntington said.

All four of the cat's paws were badly burned, and no one knows if it was animal abuse or an accident.

"We are hoping that it wasn't human-inflicted. We are hoping it was just an accident, he was standing on something and jumped into a chemical or something that was hot," an employee said.

The cat was stabilized, given pain medication and re-bandaged twice a day. Reconstructive surgery followed, with impressive results.

"This is what we live for. This is our job, to do whatever we can for these little guys," the employee said.

When the cat was hurt, he was quiet as a mouse, but once on the mend, something strange started to happen. From behind the curtain, the staff started hearing what sounded like singing. The voice was low and rich, and reminded them of a famous singer.

"We thought Placido, Luciano, Jose Carreras -- it had to be an opera star so we thought Luciano," employee Maria said.

So in front of two shelter dogs, a cat, Maria and me, the comeback cat makes meow music hours at a time. Luciano is back on his feet, and so were we, with a standing ovation.

Whoever does adopt Luciano, he'll have to be an inside cat from here on out because his claws were burned down to the nubs in the accident and he doesn't have any defense in the wild, unless you call that triple-octave good protection.

Luciano will be available for adoption in about three weeks.

In 2006, the city of San Diego began allowing political campaigns to electronically file their financial reports, giving the public easy access to information on money in city politics. The county of San Diego wasn’t as quick to make the same kind of information available and continues to lag behind the city’s efforts.
