PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Padres closer Heath Bell pitched a scoreless inning in his spring debut and San Diego defeated the Oakland Athletics 7-6 Sunday.
Bell had been out since the first day of camp because of a strained left calf. The All-Star reliever struck out two.
Athletics first baseman Daric Barton left the game early after getting hit in the calf by Logan Forsythe while leaping for a high throw in the fourth inning.
Jorge Cantu hit his first homer of the spring for San Diego.
