8 injured in downtown bus crash

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight people suffered apparently superficial injuries Wednesday when a city bus was involved in a three-vehicle accident on a Core-Columbia thoroughfare.

The accident on Broadway and 10th Avenue in downtown San Diego occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m., when an eastbound motorist suddenly braked, according to police.

The driver of a utility truck was unable decelerate in time to avoid rear-ending the sedan, and the work vehicle in turn was struck from behind by a bus, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said.

Medics tended to one slightly injured patient at the scene and took seven others to a hospital for evaluation of minor complaints of pain, according to Brown.

The accident left the eastbound traffic lanes in the area closed to through traffic for nearly two hours.

The driver who caused the pileup apparently slowed abruptly to turn left onto northbound 10th Avenue -- a bad move, since the street is a one-way southbound route, the lieutenant said.
