SAN DIEGO (CNS) - District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis informally announced Thursday that she will run for mayor of San Diego.

"I want you to be among the first to know that I've made an important decision about our future," Dumanis said in a statement sent to supporters and media outlets. "I have decided to run for mayor of the city of San Diego in 2012. I will be making an official announcement soon."

She said she is "confident my long career in public service has given me the tools I need to bring change, build consensus and move our city forward."

Dumanis said she changed the way the District Attorney's Office conducted business, and can do the same for the city.

"Our city is obviously at a crucial moment in its history," Dumanis said. "I get it. People are fed up with unsustainable pensions, a lack of transparency and political infighting. Many San Diegans are still hurting as we struggle to rebound from the recession."

Dumanis would join City Councilman Carl DeMaio as announced candidates.

A Republican like DeMaio, Dumanis said she will make an official announcement soon, and will detail her positions on the issues in the coming months.

The field to replace Mayor Jerry Sanders is expected to be crowded, with several state legislators and Rep. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, believed to be considering a run.
