SAN DIEGO (AP) — More than 500 people have gathered at a San Diego County park to honor Chelsea King, the same park where the 17-year-old was murdered by a convicted sex offender last year.
The gathering Friday at Rancho Bernardo Community Park was initiated by San Diego State University's Greek community.
A King family spokeswoman says the event began with hundreds of students placing plaques with some of Chelsea's favorite quotes along the running trails. It ended with students forming a giant human sunflower, an art project initiated by the Chelsea's Light Foundation and aerial artist and environmental activist John Quigley.
Chelsea's story was a catalyst for California's Chelsea's Law, legislation passed last year which requires sentences of life without parole for some convicted sex offenders.
