North County narcotics sweep nets dozens of arrests, treatment referrals

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Thirty-two people were arrested and more than two dozen drug abusers received treatment counseling this week during a North County law enforcement sweep intended to reduce narcotics crimes along with parole and probation violations.

About 80 peace officers from various area agencies were joined by health professionals in conducting "Operation Tip the Scale," which took place Wednesday in Poway, Ramona and surrounding communities, according to the San Diego County Methamphetamine Strike Force.

In all, a dozen organizations assisted the county Sheriff's Department with targeted patrols, warrant arrests, probation and parole checks, and drug-treatment outreach, said Deb Flemming, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit Institute for Public Strategies.

Twenty-six of those arrested agreed to sit down with a certified counselor to get information on strategies for ending their substance abuse, according to Flemming.

The participating personnel also distributed 32 resource packets to friends and family members of addicts, providing resources for treatment of dependence on illegal and over-the-counter drugs.

Over the last two years, San Diego-area "Tip the Scale" operations have resulted in more than 17,000 police contacts, about 300 arrests, in excess of 125 treatment-outreach interviews and distribution of 500-plus information packets, Flemming said.

Agencies taking part in this week's enforcement effort included the San Diego Police Department, state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Institute for Public Strategies, and the county's Probation Department, Alcohol and Drug Services, Child Welfare Services, Psychiatric Emergency Response Team and Methamphetamine Strike Force.
