San Diego County deputies win suits over 2006 killing

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal jury has ruled in favor of three San Diego County sheriff's deputies who were sued after killing an unarmed man.

The San Diego Union-Tribune says the panel deliberated for fewer than two hours on Thursday before finding that the deputies acted reasonably when they killed the man in 2006.

Twenty-seven-year-old David Lopez was shot 12 times, including nine times in the back, at a Vista mobile home.

Authorities say Lopez, a parolee with a string of convictions, was high on methamphetamine when he threatened his wife with a knife and beat a neighbor unconscious.

The deputies say they shot him when he appeared to be reaching into his waistband for a weapon. But the man's widow and daughter sued for excessive force, claiming he was running away.
