Public to avoid Imperial Beach due to unsafe sewage levels

Posted: Updated:

IMPERIAL BEACH (CNS) - People should stay out of the water in Imperial Beach Sunday because the latest rainstorm has caused sewage to enter the ocean, according to San Diego County health officials.

The contaminated area was expanded Sunday at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline north to include the Imperial Beach shoreline at Carnation Avenue, said Mark McPherson of the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.

The expansion was due to sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River that has entered the Tijuana Estuary.

The contamination of ocean water in Imperial Beach was due to the north-moving ocean currents, he said.

Until measurements show that ocean sewage levels are safe, signs warning of contaminated water will remain posted.
