Motion Skills: Virtual driving school

Posted: Updated:

MIRA MESA (CBS 8) - If you have a teenager in the house, Kris Rolfson knows what you're going through.

"Last year our son went through the process to get his license and we realized man, they did a good job. They taught him the rules of the road, but that was it for a whole lifetime of driving and we realized there's got to be more," Kris said.

So earlier this year, Kris opened Motion Skills, teaching safe driving through simulation. No hands on the wheel, just fingers on the controller.

"It's almost like a video game that they are playing and they're looking for stars which are all in the upper portion of the window, which is what the 'Look-up method' is all about. It's always looking far down the road and that's to prevent tailgating accidents," Kris said.

At Motion Skills, teens are also taught the hazards of texting and driving and driving while impaired. But that's not all you learn about auto safety.

"You'll learn how to change a flat tire safely. You'll learn how to jump start a car, if you ever need to," Kris said.

Employee Nanette Frank thinks that Kris has the right stuff.

"Kris Rolfson, the CEO here at Motion Skills is a mechanical engineer. He's a California credential teacher. He's also a two-time kart champion," she said.

Kris' goals are simple.

"If we can keep a student from getting one ticket or being in an accident, we saved them hundreds, if not thousands of dollars," he said.

And maybe a few lives along the way.
