Arraignment for suspects in Carlsbad murder

Posted: Updated:

VISTA (CNS) - Arraignment is scheduled Wednesday for three people arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 63-year-old man in Carlsbad last week.

Grant Hunter, 23, and Mercedes Yorba, 19, were arrested Saturday and booked on suspicion of murder, residential robbery and burglary in the death of Michael Michel Sahagun.

Gary Gomez, 26, was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory to murder and possession of controlled substances.

Police with a Special Weapons and Tactics team made the arrests at the Motel 6 at 3708 Plaza Drive about 4 a.m. Saturday.

Police also sought three other people seen leaving the scene in a gray or silver-colored pickup truck that may have had landscaping tools in it, Carlsbad police Lt. Bruce May said.

Carlsbad police originally said Sahagun died of stab wound after he was found lying in his detached garage in the 3500 block of Valley Street. On Monday, officials from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said the victim died of a shotgun wound to the chest shortly before 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Police and county medical examiner's officials could not immediately explain the discrepancy.

A motive for the attack was unclear.
