Firefighter Boot Drive taking donations for the Burn Institute

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The 12th annual Firefighter Boot Drive to collect money for the Burn Institute got off to a strong start Wednesday, organizers said.

Firefighters at stations and major intersections around the county are taking donations - from spare change to $100 bills - in their boots during the Wednesday morning and afternoon commutes.

"It seemed people were being pretty generous (this morning)," said Diane Sparacino of the Burn Institute, which has a goal of collecting $230,000 to fund fire and burn education programs and survivor support programs like Camp Beyond the Scars for children ages 5-17.

Sparacino said the morning was "just gang-busters" downtown, where she was based, and they also had encouraging reports from the North County.

The total take will be tabulated next week, she said.

Major locations include Front and Ash streets downtown, and Rosecrans Street at Midway Drive; Paseo del Norte at Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad; Olympic Parkway, E. H Street and Telegraph Canyon Road all at the 805 freeway in Chula Vista; Via Rancho Parkway at Interstate 15 and Broadway at state Route 78 in Escondido; and Mission Gorge Road at Cuyamaca Street in Santee.

Other locations are available online at burninstitute.org.
