Suspects in Carlsbad murder plead not guilty

VISTA (CNS) - A man and woman accused in the shooting death of a man in Carlsbad last week pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder, attempted robbery and second-degree burglary charges.

Grant McGregor Hunter, 23, and Mercedes Tiffany Yorba, 19, were each ordered held on $5 million bail in the death last Friday of 63-year-old Michael Michel Sahagun.

Gary Dean Gomez, 26, was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of being an accessory after the fact and was ordered held on $200,000 bail, said Deputy District Attorney Katherine Flaherty.

Sahagun was found in his detached garage about 1:30 a.m. Friday with a shotgun blast to the chest.

The defendants were arrested about 4 a.m. Saturday at the Motel 6 at 3708 Plaza Drive.

Hunter faces 56 years to life in prison if convicted; Yorba would faces 26 years to life; and Gomez up to three years behind bars, Flaherty said.

Vista Judge Marshall Hockett set a readiness conference for April 14 and a preliminary hearing for April 19.
