EL CAJON (CNS) - A man who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for his role in a 2006 gang-related shooting in Valencia Park that left a 17-year-old boy dead was sentenced Thursday to 13 years in prison.

In addition to voluntary manslaughter, Lamar Jovan Neal pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon in the March 20, 2006, death of Darnell King Jr.

Neal, 23, was sentenced by El Cajon Judge John Thompson.

King was in a group outside a home in the 5300 block of San Onofre Terrace when several armed assailants, including Neal, walked up and opened fire. The youth died at the scene and another person was wounded.

King's family said he was not a gang member.
