New stretch of SR-52 throws a curve at drivers

SANTEE (CBS 8) - A new stretch of Highway 52 is throwing a curve at drivers. CHP officials say the tight turn on this new onramp from state Route 52 west to the 125 south is catching some drivers by surprise.

The new ramp just opened less than two weeks ago, and already its walls have seen crapes in at least four different spots, as well as skid marks.

The new ramp's tight turn is definitely catching drivers by surprise.

"It's different. We need to get used to it," a driver said.

Cal Trans just added a sign right before the off-ramp to slow drivers down from 65 mps to 35 mph and put up some colorful arrows as well. But CHP Officer Brian Pennings says ultimately safety begins with you.

"The vehicle code requires every driver in every situation to drive in a speed and distance where you can perceive and react to anything that presents itself in front of you, including a curve in a roadway with or without a sign," he said.

The ramp is already drawing praise from commuters coming out of Santee, even those who weren't expecting to hit the brakes so hard.

"There was a little bit of a surprise, but I've been driving for a while... I'm used to that stuff," a driver said.

Cal Trans officials say more than 1,000 cars will use the ramp every day, and hope the new signage will be enough to end the bumps and bruises. As for the ramp itself, Officer Pennings says he doesn't see any reason for Cal Trans to change the current design, which he says is similar to a lot of other ramps around the county.
