Humpback puts on a whale of a show for local boaters

POINT LOMA (CBS 8) - When people go out on the ocean sailing, kayaking or even snorkeling, they see an array of creatures who call the deep blue home. For one San Diego couple, it was a rare sighting of a humpback whale that they wanted to share.

Bob and Darla Salmond call a 38-foot sailboat their home.

"It's like people have motorhomes, but our motorhome floats," Bob said.

They're regulars on the high sea, with their dauchsund Skeeter always nearby, setting sail just this past weekend.

"We left the Marina 9:30 Sunday morning and went out towards the North Coronado Island," Bob said.

And just about 90 minutes later, "I saw the whale breach. It was pretty far off, probably a half-mile to a mile," Darla said.

Bob turned the boat towards the whale's direction and Darla began shooting with her video camera.

"I think at one point we were within 50 to 75 feet to him," Bob said.

"The boat was moving in 2 to 3 foot swells," Darla said.

That would account for the shaky video, hanging onto the bow of the boat just hoping she captured the amazing moment, with Bob yelling from the captain's chair.

Wayne Perryman of the Southwest Fisheries Science Center says it's that time of year when more sightings of humpbacks will occur along our coastline as they make their way North during migration.

"It was so exhilarating; my heart was beating so fast. Just the prospect of getting a great shot of this whale coming out of the water was just incredible. Just thinking I get to see it, but I want to share it too," Darla said.

Darla and Bob say it's not uncommon to see pods of dolphins and gray whales when they're out. Bob says he saw a humpback many years ago, but for Darla this was the first ever sighting and just talking about it, you can tell she's still very excited about the experience.
