BottleHood: Message in a bottle

Posted: Updated:

EL CAJON (CBS 8) - It's time to raise our glasses and toast the El Cajon company with a conscience.

"Repurposing glass is a way to get glass out of the landfill, create local business and stimulate the retail economy," Steve Cherry said.

At BottleHood, empty beer, wine and liquor containers become classic glassware.

"The bottles come from every restaurant and bar in town. We advertise on Craigslist, we collect bottles at farmers markets on weekends," Steve said.

BottleHood is equal parts warehouse and bottle museum, a glassy tribute to our lost brain cells.

"We cut about 1,200 wine bottles a week. In fact, we even do a line of glass made from Two-buck Chuck," Steve said.

Fifths of Jack Daniels become lamps, and at BottleHood, they may not be able to hold their liquor, but they wear it well.

Leslie Tiano co-founded BottleHood in 2009.

"I don't throw anything away. I'm the eco-zealot in the equation," Leslie said. "I love letting people know that this is a repurposing project."

The rebooting bottle business is booming.

"Because San Diego is such a great convention town, there's an inordinate amount of liquor being consumed here, which is really one of the strategic reasons for our location and headquarters here," Leslie said.

So lift your glass and toast the company that's tiptoeing through the carbon footprints and know that your booze will not be tomorrow's refuse.
