Protests against fee hikes planned for Calif state colleges, including SDSU

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Protests are scheduled Wednesday at San Diego State University and other California State University campuses against proposed cuts and fee increases in next year's budget.

The demonstrations are being organized by the California Faculty Association, which is demanding fair employee contracts, affordable access to higher education, cuts to the CSU administration and the generation of additional revenue.

"Funding cuts and poorly developed policies are undermining our students' education," said Lillian Taiz, CFA president. "We need more, not fewer, people with solid, comprehensive educations that prepare them to tackle the difficult problems we are up against in our nation and the world."

The CSU, which educates about 440,000 students across 23 campuses, is preparing for a $500 million budget cut for next year, and officials worry deeper reductions are on the way.
