First military working dog memorial in San Diego County

ENCINITAS (CNS) - A memorial for military working dogs will be dedicated at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society's dog park Saturday.

It will be the first such memorial in San Diego County and the only private working dog memorial west of the Mississippi River, according to the humane society.

"The San Diego community has such strong ties to our armed forces and these magnificent animals sacrifice just as their human counterparts do," said Jim Silveira, president of the RCHS. "They should be honored for their dedication and commitment to our freedom and San Diegans should have a place to

be able to show that appreciation. "Silveira and humane society backer Madeleine Pickens came up with the idea after touring Arlington National Cemetery with military dogs and their

human handlers.

The $25,000 statue features a life-size depiction of Chyba, an 11-year-old German shepherd adopted by Madeleine and T. Boone Pickens following its

service with the 95th Military Police Battalion in Germany and Iraq.

Representatives of all branches of the military are scheduled to attend.
