Authorities closer to arrest in deadly dog poisonings

LINCOLN PARK (CBS 8) - Humane Society investigators say they're closer to making an arrest in the case of 10 dogs poisoned and killed over the weekend in a Lincoln Park trailer community.

At a community meeting on Tuesday night, Randy Lawrence of the Humane Society and SPCA told the dozens in attendance that he believes the suspect or suspects live in the El Rey Trailer Plaza and investigators will hopefully be able to come up with an arrest and ID the suspects within the next few days.

The rash of pet deaths came to light Saturday, according to the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. Animal control officers investigating the crimes found five dead dogs that day and three more on Sunday.

The apparent poisonings appear to be "a case of intentional animal cruelty," said Randy Lawrence, director of investigations for the Humane Society.

"We are asking the community to please report any leads or possible suspects," he said. "We take all cases of animal cruelty and neglect seriously, and we will continue to investigate all possibilities until we identify a perpetrator."

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477, or e-mail the agency at sdcrimestoppers.com. Tipsters may remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. The management company at the trailer community is also offering a $1,000 reward.
