Tax protesters join last-minute crowds at post office

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Demonstrators are using Monday's tax deadline to take a shot at the government.

Tea Party members showed up at the Midway post office for their third annual San Diego Tax Day Tea Party, hosted by the Southern California Tax Revolt Coalition.

The spokesperson for the coalition says their goal is to send a message to elected leaders to start spending the money being dropped off more wisely.

"We're worried about our families we're worried about their future. The growing debt in California and in the nation is unsustainable and we want to send a message that the taxpayers are not going to back down," protester Sarah Bond said. "We have a lot of work to do to change the minds of lawmakers and let them understand they need to stop spending, they need to reform, they need to be more transparent."

There are mixed reviews by some of those driving through the post office dropping off their taxes. While some are honking, others have argued with the Tea Party protesters on the side of the road. While they support lowering taxes, many say the focus needs to be on restructuring what's in place.

"The government gets plenty of our tax dollars. They just need to learn to spend it more wisely, there's so much inefficiency, there's waste, there's fraud, there's abuse, there's tons of programs that are duplicated over and over and over," Tea Party member Linda Reedy said.
