Owner of Point Loma car repair shop gunned down

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The 63-year-old owner-operator of a Point Loma auto repair shop was shot to death at his business Tuesday by an unidentified assailant, authorities said.

The fatal shooting at Joe's Auto Repair, 1930 Rosecrans St., was reported about 7:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.

Officers arrived to find the victim lying in a parking lot at the garage with several good Samaritans trying to revive him with CPR, homicide Lt. Ernie Herbert said. Paramedics took over the lifesaving attempt before pronouncing the man dead at the scene.

Authorities withheld the victim's name pending family notification, but relatives identified him to news crews as Jalal "Joe" Abou, an Iraq native and father of three who lived in Rancho San Diego.

Witnesses told investigators Abou's unidentified killer may have fled the area in a small dark-colored sedan, according to Herbert.

"At this time, there is no description of the (shooter), and the motive for the crime is not known," the lieutenant said in the mid-afternoon.
