Garden of earthly delights

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Welcome to tea party headquarters -- but there are no politics involved in Bonnie Teckemeyer's garden.

"The theme is Alice in Wonderland," she said.

Forty years in the making, Bonnie's garden is a classic for the ages.

"This is a one-woman deal. I do have somebody that helps me once a week do the heavy stuff," she said.

But the design and flow is all Bonnie. And even though every section of wondering Wonderland is neatly manicured, it's the law of the jungle out there.

"I grow only those things that live. If they don't, they are out and they get two years," Bonnie explained.

Bonnie's passionate about puttering, but sitting, well that's an entirely different matter.

"I sit for about two or three minutes and sometimes even bring a book but then I see something that can be changed, so I'm off. I'd love to sit down someday and I keep saying I'm going to sit but it never happens," she said.

In this fairy sanctuary, almost anything goes. There's a full-scale checkerboard, a small flock of pink flamingos and a journey to Africa.

"We leave Alice in Wonderland for Madagascar," Bonnie said.

This garden salutes a Disney movie Bonnie knows all too well.

"I sat in the backseat of my daughter's van with the kids and watched 'Madagascar' about 500 times," she said.

And when she's not puttering or planting or pruning, Bonnie hosts garden parties and other social events in her quarter-acre retreat.

Although these days, the garden is subtly transitioning to succulents and will be in a constant state of flux until Bonnie Teckemeyer finally takes a seat.
