Reward grows in dog-poisoning case

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A contribution from an anonymous donor Friday more than doubled an existing four-figure reward fund for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the fatal poisoning of 10 dogs at a Lincoln Park mobile-home complex, officials said.

The $3,000 gift brings the total amount being offered for tips in the case to $5,000, the San Diego Humane Society announced. Previously, the management office at El Rey Trailer Plaza on South 47th Street, where the rash of suspicious canine deaths occurred, and San Diego County Crime Stoppers had pitched in $1,000 each.

Last Saturday, animal-control officers investigating reports of suspicious canine deaths found the bodies of five dead dogs. Three more tuned up Sunday, and two on Monday morning. Investigators believe the pets were intentionally poisoned.

Necropsies -- the animal equivalent of autopsies -- have been completed, but cause-of-death rulings are on hold pending completion of toxicology tests, according to Kelli Herwehe, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society. Agency officials hope to have those results by sometime next week, she said.

Residents of the mobile home park have given investigators several leads about who might be responsible for the crime. One of the tips, provided by area children, involves an older woman who was seen walking through the complex Saturday, wearing yellow gloves and seemingly feeding dogs something from a cup she was carrying.

On Wednesday, a dead cat was found in the trailer park, but it remained unclear this afternoon if the feline might have been poisoned as well, Herwehe said.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or e-mail the agency at sdcrimestoppers.com. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
