SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 71-year-old man was hospitalized in San Diego County Sunday morning after he suffered a diabetic seizure and fell aboard a sailboat in Mexican waters.

The man was plucked off the boat by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter after the agency requested and obtained permission to enter Mexican air space, the Coast Guard reported.

The helicopter crew located the sailboat about 120 miles south of San Diego around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, said Coast Guard spokesman Rich Dann.

The patient was hoisted onto the helicopter in a basket for the trip to the Coast Guard base, from where paramedics transported him to a local hospital. His vital signs were stable during the ambulance trip, Dann said.

The man was injured when he suffered the seizure and fell, cutting his head and possibly breaking some ribs. The sailboat was en route to La Paz, Mexico, with four other people on board, Dann said.
