Killer still on the loose as family mourns murdered mechanic

EL CAJON (CBS 8) - "My father deserved so much more, he deserved the time to retire, enjoy his life," said 18-year-old Christ Abou at a prayer service Monday night for his father, 63-year-old Joe Abou. Abou was shot and killed last week Tuesday at the mechanic shop he owned in Loma Portal.  "He worked hard every day, making it clear that he did it only for one reason, my family," Joe's son said.

More than 300 people filled the Parish Hall at St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Church in El Cajon for the standing room only service. Abou's wife and three children prayed over his casket, filled with sorrow and despair. Christ Abou reflected, "I wish I could sit down and talk to him. I wish he could be at my wedding, see my children, my children's children."  Mourners are still in disbelief over Abou's death, and remember him as an honest, kind and tender-hearted man.

It was an emotional service, during which you could hear the raw cries of grief from Abou's widow. Their son ended his tribute, by speaking directly to his dad. "Baba, you will always be in our hearts. You're a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle. God rest your soul. I love you."

Abou's funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Peter Chaldean Catholic Church, where Abou had been a longtime parishioner. His burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Diego.

Meantime, San Diego Police continue their search for a suspect seen near Joe's Auto Repair the morning of the shooting. He is described as possibly Hispanic, with cropped hair, driving a dark green or black 4-door sedan.
