Mystery mural appears in Encinitas

ENCINITAS, Calif. (AP) — Mystery men in hardhats installed a stained-glass mosaic of a surfing Our Lady of Guadalupe to a wall supporting a train bridge in Encinitas.

The 10-by-10-foot mosaic appeared a few days before Easter on the bridge east of Highway 101 in Encinitas, home of the famed Swamis surf break.

The installers haven't identified themselves and the San Diego Union-Tribune says it's unclear whether the bridge is owned by the city or North County Transit District.

The Madonna is surfing the face of a wave, and appears with the slogan "Save the Ocean.

An art supply dealer estimates there is $1,000 in raw materials and 100 hours of labor in the mosaic.

City officials say it's unauthorized and they've received complaints. What will happen to the mosaic is unclear.
